The Importance of Being Artist
Shudders, throbbing of hair, agitation, tingling, pausing, questions, thinking, not thinking, all of these can trigger good art. Good art does not have to provide an answer or a solution, it can even be completely unintentional and only enrich life with an outstanding intuition that is familiar and everyday. The recognition and the successful expression of this intuition defines the quality of a work of art, whereby the knowledge of the content-changeable values and the intention of the artist may take a backseat. Art is an unforeseen event outside of our rational concepts of time. Where time stands still or dissolves, art takes its place. The sublime is now, writes Barnett Newmann in his essay "The Sublime is now". Just as any good communication comes about with the use of a language, art also depends on the use of its language. That is why you can only define good art if you understand the language of the artist and the intuition in his work. I see the task and importance of being an artist in this process of new learning and recognition, the passing on of what has been recognized, the attempt to make the not-knowing, the known and the representable tangible with the help of intuition.

Erschaudern, Haaresträuben, Aufwühlen, Prickeln, Innehalten, Fragen, Denken, Nichtdenken, all das kann gute Kunst auslösen. Gute Kunst muss nicht eine Antwort oder eine Lösung abgeben, sie kann sogar ganz absichtslos sein und das Leben nur mit einer, dem Bekannten und Alltäglichgewöhnlichen, überragenden Intuition bereichern. Das Erkennen und der gelunge Ausdruck dieser Intuition macht die Qualität eines Kunstwerks aus, wobei das Wissen um die inhaltlich wandelbaren Werte und die Absicht des Künstlers in den Hintergrund treten dürfen. Kunst ist ein unvorhergesehenes Ereignis ausserhalb unserer rationalen Zeitbegriffe. Dort, wo die Zeit stehen bleibt oder sich auflöst, nimmt sich Kunst ihren Platz. Das Erhabene ist jetzt, schreibt Barnett Newmann in seinem Essay "The Sublime is now". Wie jede gute Kommunikation erst mit dem Gebrauch einer Sprache zustande kommt, ist auch die Kunst auf den Gebrauch ihrer Sprache angewiesen. Deshalb kann man gute Kunst erst definieren, wenn man die Sprache des Künstlers und die Intuition in seinem Werk versteht. Ich sehe die Aufgabe und Importance of Being Artist in diesem Prozess des neuen Lernens und Erkennens, dem Weitergeben von Erkanntem, dem Versuch, nicht Wissendes, Kennendes und Darstellbares mit Hilfe der Intuition erfahrbar zu machen.

The art of the Bern-based painter Alfred Dam is focused on clarity, an all-encompassing snapshot of the inner and outer cosmos. Dam finds his means of representation in abstraction and especially in the use of the color blue. A dark, deep blue opens up to the viewer, which is reminiscent of these monochrome works by Yves Klein through this coloring. Because in the words of Dam the blue is "like the sky, like the infinity". The pioneering series INBETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH, since 1995, plays with the symbiosis of color and the found objects of his numerous journeys. Shards, sand, earth, blades of grass, feathers and leaves serve on a painting surface in the sign of nature. The narrow lines in gold and silver symbolize the center of heaven and earth into which man is born. The study of ancient languages, long journeys to foreign cultural areas, observation of nature and deep engagement with religion and philosophy are the creative foundation of the Austrian-born artist. His work sees itself as a study of the inner and outer environment. For Alfred Dam, people are surrounded by light and dark, which is reflected in his series COSMIC DANCE, CHANGES and MUDH from 1998 to 2009. It is about a "path into the uncertain breadth and depth in oneself". Within the path, the person is accompanied by changes, CHANGES, which lead to reflection and imagination, MUDH, of oneself. Die Kunst des in Bern lebenden Malers Alfred Dam gilt der Klarheit, einer allumfassenden Momentaufnahme des innerlichen und äußerlichen Kosmos. Sein Mittel zur Darstellung findet Dam in der Abstraktion und insbesondere in der Verwendung der Farbe Blau. Es eröffnet sich dem Betrachter ein dunkles, tiefes Blau, das durch diese Farbgebung an diese monochromen Werke von Yves Klein erinnert. Denn das Blau ist in den Worten Dams „wie der Himmel, wie die Unendlichkeit“. Die wegweisende Serie INBETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH, seit dem Jahr 1995, spielt mit der Symbiose von Farbe und den Fundstücken seiner zahlreichen Reisen. Scherben, Sand, Erde, Grashalme, Federn und Blätter dienen als Collagen in der Bildkomposition im Zeichen der Natur. Die schmalen Linien in Gold und Silber symbolisieren die Mitte von Himmel und Erde, in die der Mensch hineingeboren wurde. Das Studium alter Sprachen, langjährige Reisen in fremde Kulturräume, die Beobachtung der Natur und die tiefe Auseinandersetzung mit Religion und Philosophie sind das schaffende Fundament des in Österreich geborenen Künstlers. Sein Werk versteht sich als ein Studium der inneren und äußeren Umgebung. Der Mensch ist für Alfred Dam umgeben von Licht und Dunkel, was sich in seinen Serien COSMIC DANCE, CHANGES und MUDH aus der Zeit von 1998 bis 2009 widerspiegelt. Es handelt sich um einen „Weg in die ungewisse Weite und Tiefe in sich selbst“. Innerhalb des Weges wird der Mensch von Wandlungen, CHANGES, begleitet, die zur Reflektion und Imagination, MUDH, seiner selbst führt. Die Menschen, wie die Sterne, bewegen sich dabei im kosmischen Tanz, COSMIC DANCE. Die Farbe Blau bringt diesen sinnstiftenden Prozess zum Ausdruck:
